Help loneliness this Christmas
Did you know that over 1 million people in the UK alone haven’t spoken to anyone for a whole month?
Being lonely is hard. But being lonely during a holiday season can be excruciating. Millions of people will be dreading the thought of a cold and lonely time this Christmas
There are many people in nursing homes and mental health agencies who have no family, friends, or finances and according to the royal voluntary service many older people don’t want to be seen as a burden, nearly half a million people over the age of 75 will spend Christmas Day alone
We wait a whole year to celebrate Christmas. Yet when we plan our celebration, we tend to forget those who serve us unfailingly. We gather around the Christmas tree with friends and family. But we forget to invite those who are alone in this world. This Christmas you can bring joy to others with a simple act of kindness.
If you know of any elderly people living on your street, why not pop round and ask if there is anything you can help with. Ask them what their plans are for Christmas perhaps they would like to go somewhere. If you do have space why not invite them round for dinner. Check their living environment and ask if it’s safe and if there is anything you can look into for them. Perhaps they need a new boiler or some rooms made safer. They may have family that can help and just aren’t aware of a situation. Try and get an understanding of his or her family and see if anyone else can help. If they are completely alone then charities such as Age UK can and will help. http://www.ageuk.org.uk/
No elderly person should be alone on Christmas day unless they want to be. Many charities are desperate for people to lend a hand over the festive season but they do need to plan ahead so if you are thinking of volunteering this Christmas now is the time to do it.
Remember if we are lucky we too will be old one day, lets get some karma stirring and help out where we can this Christmas. Doing good deeds can be very rewarding and give you a great sense of fulfilment which money just cannot buy.
