“I wish I had more time”
“I need more hours in the day”
“I never have time anymore”
Come on how many times have you found yourself either thinking or saying the above. We all lead busy lives and find it difficult to juggle our careers, families, kids, and relationships. Recent research has shown quite a large per cent of us are less happy than we have been over the past 40 years. There are many theories about why, but I personally believe lack of free time can be a major reason.
Being a Mother, Father daughter, Son, Husband, wife, friend, employee, employer can leave many of us feeling exhausted and I believe you must make it a priority to take time out for yourself. We seem to have forgotten how to relax and enjoy ourselves. How often do we actually set aside time to be refreshed and healthy both in our minds and spirit. Setting time for yourself is a necessity and one should never feel guilty about doing so.
So first of all you must decide how much time you can put away for yourself and be realistic. It can be once a month, once a week or a few minutes once a day. Maybe you need to find a babysitter or use the time when your children are at sports club. You may decide to travel away from home whatever you decide finding the time is your first step.
What to do with your time
1) Have a massage
“I can’t afford it” “It would be lovely, but…” Does this sound familiar? Massage releases endorphin's, relaxes and softens injured tired muscles and can enhance your sleep quality. Reducing fatigue and giving you more energy. This is only a few of the benefits massage can bring you. Treat yourself and book in. And if you end up with a chatty massage therapist, tell them that you need some quiet time.
2) Relax in a hot bath
Light the candles, lock the door, turn your phone off, play some soft music and relax. Spending time alone in water can be tranquil and soaking in hot water is both inexpensive and pleasurable.
3) Go for a long walk
Spend time alone with your thoughts, people-watch, and take notice of the things that you don't usually notice when you're distracted with companions. A long walk can refresh you and is another inexpensive, pleasurable experience.
4) Have a nap
If you just need a break from the world, why not curl up on the couch or in your bed - and focus on the softness of the pillow and the warmth of the blankets, breathe it all in and let yourself drift away.. Naps are proven to increase productivity and research shows that the stress hormone dramatically drops after a nap especially if you didn't sleep so well the night before. Hey who said you needed to be awake when revelling in alone time? Perhaps you could even tell work you have a dentist appointment and have to leave early then go and sneak a nap in whilst everybody is out of the house.
5) Wake up early
Set your alarm to wake up before anyone else. That special time before everyone else is awake can be one of the most peaceful times you will experience. Waking up at dawn and watching the sunrise can be a beautiful experience and will allow you to spend the rest of the day with a different mind-set. Waking up early can give you time to meditate, perhaps go for a walk, listen to music or even catch up on your favorite show. Try it and see what a difference it can make to your day.
6) Use your lunch hour
How often do you actually use your lunch hour to do something for you? Don’t spend it at your desk or running errands. Spend your time wisely perhaps go and get your nails done or book the massage you think you don’t have time for. If you usually have lunch with your colleagues once a week spend it alone perhaps go for a walk/swim or just sit in the sunshine.
Spending time alone, in general, will make you feel better. It is your way to slow down, live in peace and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. By spending time with yourself you may come to appreciate your relationships more and have a better understanding of who you are and what you desire in life.
